Advanced Live Training in Integrative Cognitive Behavioural Skills

The Evolution of Your Practice

Most practitioners reach a point where standard “thought records” and “behavioral experiments” aren’t enough. When a client’s core beliefs are rooted in early developmental trauma, or when the therapeutic relationship feels “stuck,” you need a more sophisticated toolkit.

In this advanced training, Dr. John Crimmins demonstrates a masterful integration. You will learn to maintain the goal-oriented power of CBT, while drawing on Psychodynamic insights to understand the “why” behind the “what,” and Humanistic skills to ensure the therapy remains a deeply personal, relational encounter.

👉🏼  Please note that completion of the Foundation CBT course is a prerequisite for joining the Advanced CBT training.

Core Learning Outcomes

By the end of this two-day intensive, you will be equipped to:

  • Construct Deep Formulations: Build case maps that account for childhood origins (Psychodynamic) while identifying current maintenance cycles (CBT).

  • Master “Relational” Socratic Dialogue: Use questioning not as a tool of “logic,” but as a vehicle for collaborative discovery and empathy.

  • Heal the Roots of Trauma: Utilize advanced Imagery Rescripting to address early maladaptive schemas and developmental “gaps.”

  • Navigate Clinical Impasses: Identify defense mechanisms and “transference” (the client’s reaction to you) as valuable data rather than obstacles.

  • Integrate Mindful Presence: Shift from “doing” therapy to “being” with the client, enhancing the safety required for deep cognitive change.

Course Content

1. The Integrated Case Formulation

Move beyond surface symptoms by creating a “Living Formulation” that maps current triggers and maintenance cycles. We weave attachment history and developmental origins into a structured CBT framework to understand the whole person. This multi-dimensional map allows you to predict therapeutic hurdles and tailor interventions with clinical precision.

2. Depth-Focused Cognitive Strategies

Address “sticky” core beliefs that resist logic by exploring their original emotional necessity and protective functions. Dr. Crimmins demonstrates how to use psychodynamic insights to soften rigid schemas before applying cognitive restructuring. This synthesis ensures that cognitive change is not just intellectual, but a deeply felt shift in the client’s self-narrative.

3. The Therapeutic Alliance as an Intervention

Drawing from the Humanistic tradition, we focus on the “Person of the Therapist” as the primary vehicle for lasting change. Learn to use the “here-and-now” relationship to model healthy boundaries, emotional regulation, and radical empathy in real-time. By prioritizing the relational bond, you create the psychological safety required for high-intensity cognitive work.

4. Advanced Imagery & Experiential Work

Experience a “Bottom-Up” approach to healing through imagery rescripting designed to bridge the gap between thought and feeling. You will practice techniques that provide the “corrective emotional experience” necessary for shifting deep-seated personality patterns. This experiential module focuses on bypassing cognitive bypasses to reach the emotional heart of the client’s distress.

5. Integrative Trauma & Recovery

Trauma recovery requires a delicate balance of CBT stabilization and psychodynamic processing of the “unspeakable” past experience. We utilize the structure of CBT to provide essential safety while using relational depth to heal the fragmented self-image. This dual approach ensures that traumatic memories are not just managed, but are safely integrated and finally transformed.

6. Navigating Complexity & “Resistance”

When therapy stalls, we look toward unaddressed ego-defenses and the subtle “transference” occurring within the room. Dr. Crimmins teaches you to view “resistance” as valuable clinical data rather than a barrier to be overcome or ignored. You will leave with the skills to gently bring these patterns into awareness, turning a therapeutic impasse into a breakthrough.

Professional Benefits

Advanced Clinical Specialization: Move beyond foundational CBT by mastering an integrative “Triple-Threat” model (CBT, Psychodynamic, and Humanistic) that sets you apart as a specialist practitioner.

Enhanced Treatment Efficacy: Reduce “drop-out” rates and stalled progress by learning how to use the therapeutic relationship to resolve deep-seated resistance that standard protocols often miss.

Complex Case Management: Gain the confidence and the specific “how-to” tools required to treat clients with complex trauma, personality vulnerabilities, and long-term co-morbidities.

Sustainable Practice: Prevent therapist burnout by shifting from a purely “intellectual” way of working to a more grounded, relational, and mindful approach that sustains both you and your client.

Evidence-Based Flexibility: Learn how to adapt your practice to meet the unique needs of the individual without losing the clinical rigor and structure that makes CBT a gold-standard treatment.

Professional Accreditation Hours: This two-day intensive provides high-level CPD (Continuing Professional Development) hours focused on advanced clinical skills and integrative theory.

I recently attended a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in-person course led by Dr. John Crimmins, PhD, and it was a transformative experience. Dr. Crimmins skillfully brought together a culturally diverse group, guiding us through the fundamentals with empathy and expertise. His mastery of Socratic questioning and Rogers' approach provided us with practical, hands-on knowledge. Most importantly, he created a safe and secure environment, enabling us to discuss and practice ethical and practical aspects of running a CBT session. This weekend course was not only informative but also deeply engaging and inspiring. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to enhance their CBT skills.
