Course overview

Virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) use specially designed computers, visual immersion devices, and artificially constructed surroundings to provide the patient with a virtual experience, which can be utilized to diagnose and treat psychological issues that cause patients distress. In many environmental phobias, responses to imagined dangers, such as heights, public speaking, flying, and confined spaces, are often triggered by visual and auditory stimuli. In VR-based treatments, the virtual environment is used to provide artificial, controlled stimuli within the context of therapy, with the therapist monitoring the patient’s response.

Virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) has great potential because it has historically produced a “cure” approximately 90% of the time at about half the cost of traditional cognitive behavior therapy authority, and is especially promising as a treatment for PTSD, where there are simply not enough psychologists and psychiatrists to treat all the veterans with anxiety disorders diagnosed as being related to their military service.
